Egg donation gives you a chance to conceive if you are not able to produce healthy eggs yourself. It’s fast, has a high success rate, and has the minimum risk for any genetic complications. It is still the best option for women over 40 who tried IVF and other infertility treatments without success and those with a basal FSH hormone level over 15.
Advantages of egg donation
Egg donation can be the solution and is recommended if you suffer from any inherited conditions, premature menopause, chemotherapy or radiotherapy for cancer treatment, surgery injuries that result in producing low-quality eggs, or no eggs at all even, or losing your ovaries.

It is also recommended:
- If other treatments like, for example, IVF failed
- If you suffer from an inherited disorder and there is a risk of passing it on
- If you’re in your 40s and have low chances of success with your own eggs which quality decreases with age
- If there are high risks of genetic disorders
Before egg donors are recruited they are also checked for infectious diseases like HIV, hepatitis B and C, and some of the genetic disorders like cystic fibrosis. Donors are recommended to be under 36 years old but they are usually younger.
Oocyte donation – other advantages of egg donation
These are advantages that are not health-related – however, they still impact the health and emotional well-being of the child and the mother:
- You will experience pregnancy in its entirety, with all its benefits and maternal feelings
- You will be able to control the lifestyle aspects important for the baby’s development like diet, smoking, and drinking. Adoption and surrogacy do not give you this option.
- If the sperm is received from your partner the child is biologically his.
- You can breastfeed which aids the natural bond between the mother and child.
You will also be glad to know that donors are physically matched with the recipient couples as closely as possible. That includes such characteristic attributes as hair colour and eye colour. Matching goes even further to fit the couple as best as possible and that’s why occupation and even interests are also taken into account.
Information about any person born as a result of donation is not given to anybody except the child itself when turning 18 years old. There is an exception however when the son or daughter is 16 years old and is already in a sexual relationship he or she is permitted to find out about the donor’s identity. This is a good solution for people worried about sexual relationships between persons of the same biological lineage.
Recipient couples are legal parents of any child born from the result of the egg donation so you do not have to worry about that legally wise.
Success rates – disadvantage or advantage?
The success rates of IVF procedures with donated eggs are 55% or higher. Those may not look too high but they are higher than standard IVF treatments, that’s because donated eggs are always retrieved from young, healthy women, under 35 years of age. In 2009 the success rate with donor eggs rose to 33%. As you can see, there are many advantages of egg donation and it is a procedure worth considering if your eggs are of low quality.
Thanks for the article! I’ve tried IUI but with no result. I’m already 38. I was thinking about egg donation advantages and disadvantages and it seems the advantages are far greater. all I need is to convince my hubby.
Hopes up! I’d anything to have a baby!!!
The ultimate benefit and advantages of IVF is to hold that long-awaited baby in the end and to see that cute little eyes and hands. I decided to go for it – I’m in the middle of treatment. I chose anonymous donor :))
Hello Susan, what clinic did you use for your treatment. I want to go for egg donor too. Thanks.
Egg donation is wrong on so many levels and against natures natural selection. You telling me you are really going to love that child even tho he or she is NOTHING LIKE YOU. And a stranger will day that the child has your eyes or nose.. no it doesnt it has NOTHING of you genetically. I am 44 and been trying for years. I would rather have nothing than some other women’s child with my husbands sperm.
It is better to have something than nothing. And better option than adoption or surrogacy. think.
You can’t be serious.
So actually you don’t want a family, you just want a mini you and passing your genes.
I wish i can adopt but it takes about 3,5 years,So I choose egg donation instead. My goal is not to passing my DNA but to have a family, experience to be a mother and take care about my children, give them a nice childhood, teach them.
My parents never loved me even I am there’s biological child. I have no contact w them now. In my entire childhood I wished that somebody adopt me who loves me and treats me like I deserve.
If you are white and your partner is dark or African, the child wont look like you neither even you share your dna.
I hate my mother, I have always been wondering, if I can love my child is she will look similar as my mother or behave like her.
Since I have a fertility issue, egg donation is the best choice for me.
Adoption is awful. A woman has to CHOOSE you, is so expensive, wait for years and may never happen. Also, has NOTHING genetically of you or your husband. Surrogacy still involves epigenetics and the baby and you are strangers when meeting. An egg donor is a gift. It is so unlike sperm donation. Not even comparable.. EpIgentics has a great impact and birthing a child is of great significance; maybe more so than genetics. I’ve seen too many messed up genetically related families. Love and stability is what a child needs. Genes do not love a child. I am so over this dumb stigma because of close minded people who never had obstacles in their lives. Not everyone travels that perfect path. Those seemingly perfect people wagging their fingers are far from it. I am a Catholic and I believe that God will allow this if you pray on it and know in your heart it is done so seeking his guidance.
